Tempe’s major claim to fame is Arizona State University (ASU). The university was founded on March 12, 1885. This was first the Territorial Normal School. It was formed when the 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature passed an act to create a school to train teachers for the Arizona Territory. Arizona was not even a state at that point.
Today, ASU is a public metropolitan research university on five campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area, and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona. ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S. And it all started in Tempe!
❓ What does Tempe mean?
According to the Tempe.gov website, The town was named Tempe in 1879. “Lord” Darrell Duppa, an Englishman who helped establish Phoenix, is credited with suggesting the name. The sight of the butte, the wide river, and the nearby expanse of green fields reminded him of the Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece.
A vale is a valley with a stream or river running through it. As the founders looked at Tempe, they saw a river, the butte, and open green fields, thus it reminded them of a “vale”.
